Costello Breaks Ground on New National Museum of Health and Medicine

July 10, 2010 – Columbia, MD – Costello Construction has begun work on the new National Museum of Health and Medicine (NMHM), located at Walter Reed’s Forest Glen Annex in Silver Spring, Maryland. To commemorate the occasion, a groundbreaking ceremony was held on June 8.

Numerous people attended the event, including personnel from various organizations and agencies connected with the building project. Three speakers – Dr. Florabel Mullick, Director, Armed Forces Institute of Pathology; Dr. Adrianne Noe, the Museum’s director; and Colonel Judith Robinson, Commander, US Army Garrison, Fort Detrick of Frederick, Maryland – were also on hand to provide special remarks.

Costello was awarded the $10 million design-build contract by the US Army Corps of Engineers in December 2009, alongside design partner KlingStubbins. The 20,000 square foot, single story building will be a combination of load bearing masonry and structural steel frame with masonry, and includes metal panel veneer. An extensive glass curtain wall and slope glazed skylight system will also adorn the museum.

The NMHM project will house some 25 million artifacts and is expected to be completed in summer 2011. Additionally, this project will seek to obtain LEED Silver certification.
