Costello Celebrates the “Topping Out” of Bedford Hall

The two phase construction project is well underway at Longwood University

August 3, 2010 – Columbia, Md. – Costello Construction announced that it has “topped out” the Bedford Hall addition and renovation that is currently underway at Longwood University. “Topping out” is a traditional construction term used to mark the completion of all erected steel on a project, a major step in the overall building process.

Over 450 tons of steel, supplied by Hercules Steel, were used to outfit the nearly 50,000 square foot addition to Bedford Hall. The new, first-class addition will house the University’s growing Art Department, and will include more spacious and high-tech art studios, classrooms, and an all-glass art gallery for students and teachers to display their work.

The project, designed to be LEED Silver, is being financed by a General Assembly bill passed in April 2008. Funding for the bill is provided by the sale of taxpayer-backed bonds, specifically for higher education construction and renovation projects such as Bedford Hall. Undoubtedly, the new aesthetic and technology upgrade will make a significant impact on the quality of education that Longwood University provides to Art students.

Construction began in November 2009 and will be completed in two phases. The first phase, the addition, is scheduled for substantial completion on April 1, 2011. The second phase, the renovation to the existing Hall, is expected for completion in summer 2012. Costello has taken the utmost care to ensure that campus life at Longwood University remain undisturbed to allow for a smooth transition for both students and faculty.
