December, 2011 – Baltimore, MD – Costello Construction continues an impressive streak of recognition with the Silver Spring Civic Building at Veterans Plaza earning the esteemed 2011 Public Building of the Year award from the Maryland chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).
“This project perfectly fit the award – it was a project that we could all very clearly identify as offering something intensely public to the city of Silver Spring. The project seemed to be extraordinarily well detailed and really exceptional. It has a huge scale which allows it to have presence along the plaza and it seemed to create a kind of physical representation of a place where people could gather for communal activities. This was an obvious choice for this award.” – AIA Maryland Jury Comments
The multi-use facility, designed by internationally recognized Machado and Silvetti Associates, was constructed with the utmost detail. Amenities include multi-media resource and meeting rooms, a great room with the capacity for 800 people, an art gallery, open air courtyard, ice rink, office spaces and the Round House Theatre. Notable elements in the building include fritted glass used for climate control, IPE siding, fiber component rain screens, natural stone and bamboo floors and a high efficiency HVAC system that has magnetic bearings to reduce electricity consumption.
The project also gained honors from AIA New England, earning a 2011 Special Citation for Design Excellence award.
The AIA Maryland Design Awards aim to encourage and recognize distinguished architectural achievement and focus public attention on the Architect’s role in shaping the quality of life through design excellence.
