The Rockville Police Station, designed by Wheeler Goodman Masek Architects, included the renovation/historic restoration of the existing, former United States Post Office building and the construction of a new 14,500 square foot, three-story “Annex” building on the same site. As a significant historic structure, the facade of the existing building was meticulously restored and the interior of the Post Office completely renovated, including a full restoration of the historic lobby and vestibule. The architecture of the new Annex compliments the existing Post Office building in scale and theme, while contemporary materials clearly differentiate it from the historic building.

Structural details of the Annex include a cast-in-place (CIP) concrete foundation, CMU load bearing walls and precast structural concrete planks. The existing Post Office renovation details include concrete underpinning, expansion and enlargement to the existing basement and new structural steel and poured concrete decks.

Architecturally, the Annex contains a vegetative green roof system, skylights, blast and bullet resistant curtainwall, storefront glass and masonry, and cast stone veneer. Both the Annex and the existing Post Office include hydraulic elevators and exterior zinc metal panels. Extensive restoration to the existing masonry, marble, terrazzo, doors and exterior windows were incorporated in the existing building as well.
