Costello Construction recently completed the North Laurel Community Pool Addition in Laurel, Maryland, a nearly 23,000-square-foot, one-story expansion that seamlessly connects a new aquatic facility to the existing 50+ Center, creating an expanded community resource designed to serve residents of all ages and abilities.

The addition features a competition lap pool, therapy and leisure pool, men’s and women’s locker rooms, six family restrooms, a reception area, and dedicated office space. While the new pool component brought an entirely new program to the facility, one of the project’s most important challenges was integrating the addition with the existing 50+ Center so that the completed facility functions as one cohesive space.

The architectural connection between the existing center and new addition was carefully coordinated, including the integration of an expansive curtain wall system that introduces abundant natural light into the pool environment and creates a bright, welcoming atmosphere. The transition between existing and new construction required close coordination of structure, finishes, building envelope systems, and interior spaces to create a seamless connection rather than a distinct separation between the two facilities.

The project also required sophisticated HVAC and mechanical systems tailored to the demanding conditions of an indoor aquatic environment. Maintaining proper temperature, humidity, ventilation, and air quality was essential for occupant comfort and long-term protection of the building and finishes. These systems were carefully coordinated within the new pool addition and integrated with the existing facility, requiring detailed planning and collaboration throughout construction.

Working within and alongside an existing, operational community facility added another layer of complexity to the project. Careful sequencing and coordination were essential to managing the transition between the existing 50+ Center and the new pool component while delivering a finished facility that feels intentional, connected, and fully integrated.
